Reverend Sherrill Denise Scott was born in Durham, North Carolina to Woodrow and Virginia Self. She is the eldest of five children. In 1962 the family moved to New York and settled in Manhattan. She graduated from Central Commercial High School where her major was Bookkeeping. After college she began to work for New York State. After exploring various titles and agencies she worked as a Principal Court Clerk for the New York State Surrogate's Court (This is the court of Widows, Widowers, and Orphans), where she was head of the Administration Department. In December 2007, she retired from working for the State of New York after 35 years of service.
She grow up in the Church of God of Prophecy where she accepted Christ when she was about 12. When she left her parent's home, she left the church. In 1986, she felt the Lord leading her back to church and she joined the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Yonkers, NY, where she renewed her relationship with the Lord and was baptized. Soon after she acknowledged her call to the ministry. She was licensed to preach in November 1997 and graduated from Christian Love Bible Institute shortly thereafter.
On March 16, 2001, Sherrill passed the examination for ordination and was ordained on June 3, 2001 by the First Baptist Church, Far Rockaway, NY in conjunction with the Eastern Baptist Association of New York Inc. She is the first female member of First Baptist Church to be ordained by the church body. She has served as President of the Southern Westchester Chapter of Free Women In Christ and credits most of her skills for ministry to this organization and its founder, the late Dr. Millicent J. Norton.
Presently a member of the Rising Star Baptist Church in Jamaica under the pastoral leadership of her husband, she enjoys working alongside him. Sherrill finds it challenging, as well as, rewarding to be able to edify and help equip women to be used for the Master's use. She is often times called on to advise and counsel different women in her church. She thanks God for the many gifts He has bestowed upon her one of which being the gift of encouragement. Sherrill holds an Associates Degree in Biblical Studies from Freedom Bible College and Seminary, Rogers, AR.
She is married to Pastor Norman Wallace Scott. Sherrill states, "The Lord really blessed me with a great man of God. My husband is a great supporter of my ministry and never hesitates to encourage or instruct. I thank God for him." Together, she and her husband have a blended family of two children, one son, Terrence, one daughter, Donna, one son-in-law, Howard, three grandchildren, Derek, Dana, and Qwame.
